History of Medical Records in India

Till 1925, there was no organized medical records maintained in the country, from 1925 – 1930, the inpatientadmission records are maintained in an organized manner, the same was continued till 1956. All hospitals arestarted maintain the records on their own policies.

At CMC, the institution granted INR 33,000/- and deputed Shri Daniel Gajaraj to undergo fellowship in medical records librarian in the year 1955 at Grant Hospital School for Medical Records Librarians, Chicago, USA and he started maintaining organized inpatient and outpatient records.

Government has decided to send their representatives to CMC Vellore and undergo MRO course in 1961. Hence there are lot of changes implemented in the medical records keeping in all hospitals.

The growth of Medical Records and its professionals for the decades of 1970 – 2000 were the milestones, where the major acts like MTP act, Mental Act, PCPNDT Act and others started laying guidelines and regulations.

About MEDRECON Annual National Medical Records Conference :

As mentioned earlier, the organizing secretary of first conference did not think that this will go as a series of conference every year. First conference was conducted in 1999 in Madurai and after two years interval, conference was conducted by Madras Medical Mission & Sundaram Medical Foundation in 2002.

The best part of second conference in 2002 which is conducted by Madras Medical Mission & Sundaram Medical Foundation is, on the conference itself it was decided and announced that the next year conference will be conducted by CMC Hospital Vellore. Since then it became mandatory that the next year conference will be announced previous year itself.

Since then without interruption, conferences were scheduled till COVID – Pandemic, after COVID once again kick started and this was th 25 Silver Jubillee Anniversary Conference, more of a conference it was a celebration.
